🚀 GST 2.0 is here — What’s buzzing this week? 🚀
The 56th GST Council meeting (Sept 3, 2025) shook things up. From 22 Sept 2025, India shifted to a simplified 3‑rate structure: - 0% – essentials like milk, fresh veggies, basic meds (still exempt) - 5% – daily necessities (shampoo, soap, butter, ghee, packaged snacks, small‑car parts, spectacles) - 18% – most goods & services (ACs, TVs, small cars, washing machines) - 40% – luxury & sin items (premium cars >350 cc, aerated drinks, tobacco, pan masala, online gaming)
Why the change? - Cut 12 % & 28 % slabs, easing compliance for MSMEs. - Reduced tax on 200+ items, saving consumers ~₹ 30,000 cr annually. - Inverted duty fixes → better working‑capital flow for manufacturers.
Trending news: 🔹 Compensation cess to end soon – Loans taken during COVID are being repaid, so the cess on tobacco & pan masala will cease. Two new Bills (Central Excise Amendment Bill, 2025 & Health Security & National Security Cess Bill, 2025) aim to replace it with excise duty/cess, keeping the overall tax burden unchanged.¹ ² ³
🔹 GSTN warning: If you haven’t updated your bank details by 2 Dec 2025, your registration may be suspended. This is part of the fraud‑prevention push.⁴
🔹 Impact: - FMCG & consumer durables see 5‑18 % slabs, making essentials cheaper. - Luxury cars & sin goods now at 40 % GST, hitting premium segments. - Insurance (health/life) moved to 0% GST, a big relief for policyholders.
