New Income-tax Act 2025: What Changes from April 2026?

India’s New Income-tax Act, 2025 marks a major restructuring of India’s income-tax law. The new law took effect from 1 April 2026 and replaced the Income-tax Act, 1961 under the new framework. One major change is the move from “previous year” and “assessment year” to the simpler concept of a “tax year”. The new Act also reorganises provisions, uses clearer language, reduces cross-referencing and incorporates many explanations and provisos into the main sections. The purpose of the New Income-tax Act 2025 is primarily simplification and easier compliance. According to official guidance, the reform is not intended to introduce a new tax or increase the overall tax burden merely because of the replacement of the 1961 Act. The Income-tax Rules, 2026 also came into force from 1 April 2026. Taxpayers should check which law applies to a transaction, return, payment or proceeding, as transitional provisions may continue to apply to matters relating to earlier tax periods. For taxpayers, businesses and professionals, it is important to understand the new terminology, tax-year concept and updated compliance procedures before making tax decisions. Income Tax Refund 2026: How to Check Refund Status

Have you filed your Income Tax Return and are waiting for your refund? Checking your Income Tax Refund Status 2026 can help you understand whether your return has been processed and whether further action is required. An income tax refund may arise when tax paid through TDS, advance tax or self-assessment tax is more than the tax liability, subject to applicable processing and verification. To check your ITR refund status, log in to the official Income Tax e-Filing portal and review the status of your filed return. Taxpayers should also ensure that their bank account details are correct and eligible for receiving the refund. Before checking for a refund, verify that your ITR has been filed successfully and e-verified, wherever applicable. Also review Form 26AS, AIS, TDS details, bank interest, deductions and other income for possible mismatches. If your refund is delayed, do not assume it has been rejected. Processing time may depend on verification and other checks. Review portal communications carefully. If there is a TDS mismatch, AIS mismatch or incorrect bank information, the issue may require correction or action. For complex cases, expert assistance may be useful. Tax Deducted at Source (TDS): Form 26AS & AIS

Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) is an important part of Income Tax compliance. Before filing your Income Tax Return (ITR), taxpayers should verify TDS details, Form 26AS and the Annual Information Statement (AIS). Proper reconciliation can help reduce mismatches and issues while claiming tax credit or an income tax refund. Form 26AS contains important tax-related information, including TDS details and other information reported to the Income Tax Department. AIS provides information available with the department. Taxpayers should compare this data with salary records, bank statements, interest certificates and other supporting documents. Before filing your ITR, check whether TDS shown in Form 16 or other TDS certificates matches Form 26AS. Also review AIS for salary, bank interest, dividends, securities transactions and mutual fund transactions. A difference does not always mean that your ITR is incorrect, but every mismatch should be properly reviewed. Do not blindly copy AIS information or ignore differences. Check source documents and report income correctly under Income Tax provisions. Regular TDS reconciliation can help identify missing tax credits, incorrect entries and reporting differences before filing ITR. Income Tax Return for Mutual Funds: ITR Filing Guide 2026

Investing in mutual funds can help individuals build long-term wealth, but mutual fund taxation and ITR filing are equally important. When mutual fund units are redeemed or sold, the transaction may result in a capital gain or loss that must be reported correctly in the Income Tax Return (ITR), subject to applicable tax rules. For AY 2026-27, investors should carefully review whether their mutual fund transactions result in Short-Term Capital Gain (STCG) or Long-Term Capital Gain (LTCG). The tax treatment may depend on factors such as the type of mutual fund, nature of the investment, holding period and applicable Income Tax provisions. Before filing your Income Tax Return for Mutual Funds, collect and verify your capital gains statement, purchase and redemption details, transaction dates, sale value and other relevant records. Investors should also review information available in AIS and reconcile it with their own mutual fund statements and records. Incorrect reporting of mutual fund transactions may result in mismatches or future income tax compliance issues. Capital losses, where eligible, may also require proper reporting and may be subject to applicable set-off and carry-forward provisions. Choosing correct ITR form is vital where taxpayer has capital gains along with salary, business or other income. Before filing return, review all income details, TDS, deductions and tax payments to avoid errors and notice

Capital gains tax is an important part of Income Tax planning for investors and property owners. If you sell shares, mutual funds, land, a house or another capital asset, the profit may be taxable under the head “Capital Gains”, depending on the asset and applicable tax provisions. For AY 2026-27, taxpayers should identify whether a gain is Short-Term Capital Gain (STCG) or Long-Term Capital Gain (LTCG). The holding period and tax treatment can differ for listed shares, equity-oriented mutual funds, property and other assets. Before filing your Income Tax Return (ITR), verify purchase and sale details, dates, eligible expenses, capital gains statements and supporting documents. Mutual fund investors should reconcile redemption transactions with their statements. Property transactions also require careful record-keeping. Maintain documents relating to purchase cost, sale consideration, improvement expenses and other relevant information. Tax exemptions or relief may be available in eligible cases, subject to applicable conditions. Incorrect reporting can lead to mismatches or compliance issues. Income Tax Notice 2026: How to Check & Reply

Receiving an Income Tax Notice can cause concern, but a notice does not automatically mean that a taxpayer has committed an error or offence. Notices may be issued because of differences in information, missing details, defective returns, outstanding demands, TDS mismatches or other compliance-related matters. If you receive an Income Tax Notice 2026, first check the communication carefully through the official Income Tax e-Filing portal. Verify the notice or communication reference number, PAN, assessment year, section mentioned, reason for the communication and the deadline for submitting a response. Before replying, compare the information in your Income Tax Return (ITR) with supporting records such as Form 16, Form 26AS, AIS, bank statements, TDS details, capital gains statements, mutual fund records and other relevant documents. Proper reconciliation can help identify whether the difference is due to an incorrect entry, missing information or a mismatch in reported data. Do not ignore an Income Tax notice. Missing the response deadline may create additional compliance difficulties. However, taxpayers should also avoid submitting incomplete or incorrect information in haste. Review the facts and supporting documents before filing a response. For tax demand, scrutiny, defective ITR, AIS/TDS mismatch, capital gains or MF taxation, professional help may help. A tax expert can review notice and documents based on facts of case

ITR-3 vs ITR-4: Which ITR Form Should You Choose?

Choosing the correct Income Tax Return (ITR) form is important for taxpayers having income from business or profession. For AY 2026-27, many business owners, professionals, freelancers and transporters need to understand the difference between ITR-3 and ITR-4 (Sugam) before filing their Income Tax Return. ITR-3 is generally applicable to Individuals and HUFs having income under the head Profits and Gains of Business or Profession who are not eligible to file ITR-1, ITR-2 or ITR-4. It may be relevant where detailed reporting of business or professional income, assets, liabilities, capital gains or other applicable financial information is required. ITR-4 (Sugam) is a simplified return available to eligible resident Individuals, HUFs and Firms other than LLPs with total income within the prescribed limit and business or professional income computed on a presumptive basis under Sections 44AD, 44ADA or 44AE, subject to applicable conditions. Before selecting ITR-4, taxpayers should check restrictions relating to total income, capital gains, foreign assets or income, company directorship, unlisted shares and brought-forward losses. Not every business taxpayer is eligible for ITR-4. Choosing the wrong ITR form may create filing and compliance issues. Before filing, verify your business turnover, professional receipts, books of accounts, presumptive taxation eligibility, capital gains and other income.
