Tax Deducted at Source (TDS): Form 26AS & AIS
Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) is an important part of Income Tax compliance. Before filing your Income Tax Return (ITR), taxpayers should verify TDS details, Form 26AS and the Annual Information Statement (AIS). Proper reconciliation can help reduce mismatches and issues while claiming tax credit or an income tax refund.
Form 26AS contains important tax-related information, including TDS details and other information reported to the Income Tax Department. AIS provides information available with the department. Taxpayers should compare this data with salary records, bank statements, interest certificates and other supporting documents.
Before filing your ITR, check whether TDS shown in Form 16 or other TDS certificates matches Form 26AS. Also review AIS for salary, bank interest, dividends, securities transactions and mutual fund transactions.
A difference does not always mean that your ITR is incorrect, but every mismatch should be properly reviewed. Do not blindly copy AIS information or ignore differences. Check source documents and report income correctly under Income Tax provisions.
Regular TDS reconciliation can help identify missing tax credits, incorrect entries and reporting differences before filing ITR.
